You are quite right, I am a 'foreigner'. Hurghada was not our first choice, but I was offered a job here, and as I am a workaholic and bored senseless by staying at home, I jumped at the chance. I am Scottish.
Dahar is the not really the oldest part of the city. The original part, just off El Arousa Square was the original fishing village. Sadly most of the fishermen's cottages have been demolished to make way for yet another tourist hotel. I personally think that is very short-sighted. Now perhaps the locals in those cottages would not have been interested, but I am sure many tourists would have been, in seeing those original buildings and just how hard life was, and still is, for those people. Saying that the locals who did live in them are now very rich people as they were paid very handsomely indeed to move. Perhaps this is progress, but sometimes progress spoils the character of a place.
Dahar - is pretty amazing. Not so many buildings going up there as this part is mainly 'finished'. Lots and lots of tourist shops among the local shops. I love this part of town, it has a totally different atmosphere. Not so sanitised as the rest of the city. By that I mean, there is more local colour, smells (spices etc), great fun bartering.
I absolutely agree about the water and beaches here. They are pretty amazing. In fact a lot of people rave about the Great Barrier Reef, but did you know that there are more varieties of fish in the Red Sea. Oh blimey I sound so pleased with myself, but as I said before, I cannot imagine living anywhere else now.
Every morning when I get up, I say to my husband, well the sun is shining in paradise again.
To put the icing on the cake for me, my daughter is paying her first visit in August this year. I am already planning the trips.
Everyone have a lovely day.
