Alexandria to the pyramids

Hi..My partner and I will be on a Med cruise over xmas and new year and will be stopping at Alexandria for 2 days and was wondering the easiest and least expensive way to visit the pyramids and how far they are from Alexandria port as I don't really want to go on an organised tour from the ship...also any decent, reasonable hotels close to the pyramids that anyone can recomend?
Any help appreciated
Thanks

I would think easiest option would be to fly down to Cairo, it's pretty cheap and quick, you can check EGYPTAIR - Welcome to EGYPTAIR website

Hotels close to the Pyramids is another matter, I have use TravelRepublic in the past and have found some reasonable hotels through them.

You will need to take a taxi from the airport, not sure about the fare but it will probably cost you 150-200 EGP (someone else might have a better idea on that)

I have a contact there, she is a good tour guide and can arrange transfers and show you Cairo, probably worth paying her for a day or so, I have used her to arrange a private car with driver for a day which worked out pretty good, and a lot less hassle.

The Hotel Union was in a huge, central locality just off the Corniche and if you're preferred to stroll you have many great restaurants, attractions, internet cafes and the main tourist office all not far away. Almost everything else you could possibly want to get to is a 5 Eg Pound taxi fare away unless you're going as far as the Montezah Gardens or the like. The view of the sea was blissful from our balcony as requested when we booked.

It took a few minutes to figure out how to get the hot water working in our bathroom but we eventually figured it out. Toilet paper was provided as well as pillows and beddings, a small TV which we successfully plugged our digicams to view our photos, a full sized fridge and working power points. The common room had a large screen TV, water and soda was sold at a very reasonable price. Breakfast was included.

Have a wonderful stay in Alexandria
