A trip to Cairo is to be expected . . .
If one is travelling in Egypt, of course. What "out of the way" places would be good to see in Cairo instead of just the normal "tourist" locations? I really like to visit places that many others might not. I would, of course, visit the major attractions as well, but really like to see places that aren't normally on the "tours."

mamab,
that is really a very good question, there a lot to see in cairo more than the tourists attraction. that is really you can find in the book.
but what other tourists do not see in Cairo is a lot. i will try to give an idea about some places and please feel free to ask about anything you want.
Old Cairo: most tourists going there they only stop by the Bazaar of Khan El khalil for some shopping. but that is not really the old cairo. there are some streets behind Khan El Khalili like Gamalleya , it is wonderful place where you can see hand worker. how they made most of the old Egyptian Materials. for me as Egyptian i am stil amazed everytime i go there.
Beit El Sewehly: one unique house in Cairo , and you can spend a full day over there going around looking for the wonderful hand made painting all over the walls of the house.
Azhar Park. Located near the Bazaar of Khan El khalil again . it is all green , lakes , restaurants where the Egyptian families are going there in weekends one unique place again in cairo.
Cairo by night : where you can have a very large selection of Restaurants , bars , nile dinner cruises. the heart of cairo is full of non touristic places like that. i recomend few like Morroco , Deals , Cairo jazz club.
Islam Musuem: this is really a very good musuem in ciaro that i think no one is going there ( everytime i am there it is really empty. but it is really very nice place where you can have a good idea about the real islam history.
Fayoum Oasis: not really much tourists going there. me being working in tourism i started to send my clients since one year for one day trip from cairo.
i guess that is all what i have in mind at the moment but i will keep posting if i get any other ideas.
Please keep in touch and have a good day

Yes, this is exactly the kind of information I was looking for! Thank you so much!!
The streets behind the Bazaar of Khan El Khalili really sound appealing to me. How big are the streets? Just big enough to get through on foot, or would you be okay in a car? I don't want to offend, but am curious about how "safe" it is to go off the beaten path, as it were.

What a great list... thank you! One of the things that sounds best to me is a dinner cruise on the Nile... how wonderful that would be!

Streets behind Khan El Khalili Bazaar are only big enough to go an feet. cars can not really get there. and do not worry it is really very safe to be there. people are very friendly and they will keep invite you for tea. and do not worry as well there is no hussel at all , as they do not sell anything there.

Egyptian_Sharm, are there boats/cruises that go on the nile that don't have belly dancers or is that common to most of them?

Iman, Actually there are alot of boats going on the nile for the dinner cruise and most of them have this show. but some of these boats are having two decks . so if you do not want to show you can book on the second floor.
let me know if you need help with boat names ?
