Poverty in Cairo

I was just wondering over the years I have read alot on Cairo and have seen that there is a lot of poverty. I was just wondering what is the main reason for this? Are there not enough jobs or is the wage just not enough to live off of? Thanks

Considering that Cairo (the metro area) has a population of over 19 million people, it stands to reason that there's probably a huge number of people under the poverty level. Like with any enormous urban area, between real estate values and the number of jobs, there are likely to be people that shouldn't be there but can't get out. I'd love to hear Egyptians on this.

I think there is a decent amount of poverty in any tourist destination. Tourism and foreign interest can sometimes drive up the prices of local goods and services. I know that people looking to retire and purchase homes in Guatemala drive the prices up astronomically there.

With those numbers of people, I agree some poverty is to be expected.

I also understand that there's generally quite a low crime rate for this number of people in an urban area.

I would be surprised if there WEREN'T a poverty problem in a city with 19million people! The fact that they have such a low crime level with that many people is amazing!

It is amazing when you think about such a low crime rate when there are that many people. I don't remember seeing that there were that many people, that is a lot of people.

I was surprised as well, but that number incorporates all the suburbs too. Quite alot of square miles, but the population of Cairo proper is something like 8 or 9 million.
