Lamb?

How popular is lamb in egypt? I know in Turkey it's very very popular along with some other middle eastern countries. Over in Germany I've seen a lot of Turkey's fastfood restaurants and they have lamb (or beef) on a big spit and roast it. They then shave off some meat onto some bread and pour on a white garlic sauce. It's so amazing especially since it's so cheap and it's considered fast food.

I love lamb so I always order wherever I am to see how it is served in other countries. I was thrilled to find it kabab style in Egypt but there were some really interesting other ways of serving it.

Lamb is really big in Greece too, I hear.

Is it one of the more popular meats in Egypt, I wonder? Kabab style sounds delicious...my mouth is watering now!

I've only had lamb once in my life, and that was a loooong time ago. So, I don't remember much what it tastes like. I remember it being served with mint jelly, though.

What would be a traditional way to fix lamb, if one were in Egypt?

If I rememer right there is a stew that is very good that use lamb and alot of people in Egypt eat it. I cannot remember the name of it though. I remember a friend who went to Egypt telling me about it and he loved it. I love lamb myself but I don't eat a lot of it.

Most of the lamb recipes I've come across from Egypt have been very much like other dishes served all over North Africa ...minced with a lot of seasoning or in a slow cooked casserole. I've lost a favorite recipe for making skinless lamb sausage ...had fennel seeds and some other great things in it. Was served with flat bread and a yohgurt sauce. Just great.

I donīt think I have ever tried lamb, actually! It is not readily available here in Guatemala, at least not decent quality, from what I have heard. In many of the Egyptian recipes that I have come across, they do use lamb, so it seems to be pretty popular. I think sheep are a little easier to raise in a desert environment than cows, that might be why.

It's also cultural and sheep and goats are smaller to house and feed than cattle.

P.S. We had some spring lamb this week and it was fabulous!

I have to ask what is spring lamb? Is it different in some way? Just curious. Is lamb exspensive to buy in Egypt? I ask because here in the states it is actually one of the pricier meats.

Spring lamb is meat that has just been slaughtered. Most lambs are born early in the new year and by now, they are at a really good age for slaughter. Alot of people I know consider it as much an Easter meal as others do ham. Lamb is expensive in some parts of the country but I think it has to do with popularity too. Not bad here in Ct.
