Conservative Dress for Women

I was just reading that women should dress conservatively in Egypt as it is a mainly Muslim country. I would not usually wear belly tops or short skirts anyway, but I have noticed that in Latin American countries many foreigners tend to dress quite provocatively. Do you respect the local culture as a female and take care with what you dress in?

I'm sure that males and females would be well advised to dress conservatively and respect the Muslim faith while they're traveling in Egypt.

I personally would respect the culture. I am not into wearing the real short shorts anyway so it wouldn't be much of a problem. I just am not one to draw attention to myself.

In Egypt, I always wear shirts with short sleeves, and either long cotton skirts or cropped trousers. I would never wear anything above the knee or showing cleavage whilst out and about. Apart from anything else, its actually cooler to wear a long cotton skirt than a pair of shorts. It also means there is a lot less hassle when walking about. I guess its all about respecting the culture.
However, it is fine to wear whatever you want in the hotels.

I think it pays to pay attention to where you will be visiting and dress accordingly. Religious sites in particular. I've seen people turned away from the HOly Sepulcre in Jerusalem for skimpy dressing on hot days. Save that stuff for cafes and hotels!

What's the old saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"? I wouldn't rush out and buy native clothing, but I would pay attention to how people are dressed and try to dress similarly. I'm sure that in the larger cities, there is much "western" clothing worn, so I don't think I'd have a problem.

If I am correct it is really not that hard to abide by the customs. It is just when you wear something really revealing or that shows alot of skin that is disrepectful to the culture.

Unless you want alot of unwanted attention, it would be best to dress appropriately for the culture and to "blend in" as best as possible. You shouldn't be advertising your body on your vacation anyways.

I think if you dress respectibly and respectfully you're okay no matter what the clothing is.

Insofar as buying local clothing ...I've learned my lesson on that! What looks good there just isn't the same when you get it home and try and integrate it into your wardrobe.
