"Walk Like an Egyptian"

Anyone else remember that 80s song? It sometimes pops into my head when I think about Egypt. Funny this is...Egyptians never walked like that, lol.

I remember that hit single by The Bangles, and also the music video. I'd be curious to know what Egyptian people think of it?

Hopefully they take it in stride as some light American pop culture and aren't offended by it.

I remember this song. I never really cared for it myself. But I also didn't care for the Bangles either. I have not heard this one in awhile. It was a pretty big song here in the States.

I think the reason why they "walked" that way in the video is because that's the way they "appeared" to be walking in the reliefs and other examples from Egyptian art.

Yes I think that's the idea, too.

This thread also reminds me of Steve Martin's song "King Tut" and his dancing to it. I find it interesting how Egyptian references pop up in some unusual ways in American pop culture.

Haha, I had forgotten about "King Tut"! I would have to agree with you, Taggart...it kind of has me thinking that it would be an interesting research project to investigate how ancient Egyptian culture has made its way into modern pop culture.

I remember that song. I had forgotten about it ages ago, and we never had tv until the late 90īs, so I didnīt see the video. I guess I learned the "walk" from friends who saw it.

Where do you live, gblued? I can't imagine not having a tv until the 90s! But, I guess it depends on where you live, and what is important to you. TV shouldn't be that important, but unfortunately, it is in most homes.
