Women's Rights In Ancient Egypt

I read that in ancient Egypt, women who weren't slaves had more rights that women in some modern day societies.

Also, the article said that if a couple divorced, the woman was entitled to half of the couple's assets.

I wonder to what extent lawyers were involved back then?

Interesting question and I was curious. Found this:

So there were basically no judges and no lawyers ...any official could make the ruling or decision. Wonder if there was graft back then? LOL.

Seems like women could enjoy quite a bit of power back then. I wonder what percentage of the female population wasn't enslaved, though. I have a feeling that female power may have been related to elite status. Hmmm.

I would agree that it probably had alot to do with your status in the community. Very interesting read by the way.

Thanks for posting the link. I notice it has other interesting pages linked to it, too. There's an interesting area that deals with timelines there.
