It amazes me
Hurghada is basically the "new" city in a country that is surrounded by antiquity, However, having been established in the early 20th century, it is now one of the most well-known tourist resorts on the Red Sea. It truly looks like a vacation-lover's dream, especially if one is interested in the sand, the surf, and any type of water activity.

You're right. It does seem to be becoming a hot spot for a vacation. This is exactly the type of vacation I am looking to take here in the near future.

Hurghada - a beautiful city? If you think half finished buildings everywhere is beautiful maybe so. Hurghada is called the Bride of the Red Sea - at the moment is is the rather tatty bride of the Red Sea. IF it ever gets finished it could be beautiful.
Now before you all jump down my throat for being honest, I actually live and work here and have done so since 2003.
The beaches are wonderful, the sea is amazing, the restaurants are plentiful, cheap and excellent. The nightlife rocks.
Don't let me put off anyone coming to visit my adopted city, the new 'touristic' area is clean, pedestrianised with a good selection of shops, restaurants, hotels etc.
I have chosen to make my home here and expect to see out the rest of my days here.

So I take it you're not originally from Egypt, just from the way you type. Where are you from originally, and why did you choose Hurghada over some other area in Egypt?

I know that El Dahar is the oldest part ...does it have some charm? Not as many new buildings?
Living there, do you find it less Egyptian than other places because of all the foreign influence and hotel/resorts?

I saw your location, yes... but I'll have to say that wonderful beaches by amazing water, good restaurants, and memorable nightlife sounds pretty great to me!

You are quite right, I am a 'foreigner'. Hurghada was not our first choice, but I was offered a job here, and as I am a workaholic and bored senseless by staying at home, I jumped at the chance. I am Scottish.
Dahar is the not really the oldest part of the city. The original part, just off El Arousa Square was the original fishing village. Sadly most of the fishermen's cottages have been demolished to make way for yet another tourist hotel. I personally think that is very short-sighted. Now perhaps the locals in those cottages would not have been interested, but I am sure many tourists would have been, in seeing those original buildings and just how hard life was, and still is, for those people. Saying that the locals who did live in them are now very rich people as they were paid very handsomely indeed to move. Perhaps this is progress, but sometimes progress spoils the character of a place.
Dahar - is pretty amazing. Not so many buildings going up there as this part is mainly 'finished'. Lots and lots of tourist shops among the local shops. I love this part of town, it has a totally different atmosphere. Not so sanitised as the rest of the city. By that I mean, there is more local colour, smells (spices etc), great fun bartering.
I absolutely agree about the water and beaches here. They are pretty amazing. In fact a lot of people rave about the Great Barrier Reef, but did you know that there are more varieties of fish in the Red Sea. Oh blimey I sound so pleased with myself, but as I said before, I cannot imagine living anywhere else now.
Every morning when I get up, I say to my husband, well the sun is shining in paradise again.
To put the icing on the cake for me, my daughter is paying her first visit in August this year. I am already planning the trips.
Everyone have a lovely day.

i can imagine now how much you love Hurghada. i love it , if you just say unfinished Hurghada , you better seen it ten years ago , or even 15 years ago . i will tell you Hurghada is growin much faster than anywhere else in Egypt and it is still the bride of the red sea !!!!

I can see why you tell your husband the the sun is shining in paradise again! Do you do any diving? I know that area is very popular for it.
