Dangerous !!

Hi
a pal of mine who visits Egypt regularly has warned me against Hurghada, warning me that its a bit dangerous and that most people go to hotels and stay inside the security fence and the private beach

Is that true?

what experience do you have of Hurghada, and its nightlife?

Cleo

Hi Cleo. Can't think what he means. I've always found Hurghada to be very safe.If he means Bombings then you could say the same about practically every country in the world.Hurghada is very safe at any time day or night.

Hi Rik - it wasnt in relation to bombs but that all the hotels were on gated complexes

would be nice to see a few more replies from other forum members on this

I have been to Hurghada a few times now and always felt very safe, no problems at all.

Not been to any clubs so can't say what they are like, but I would think they are pretty safe place too.

People who stay in the hotels are losing out on the real Egypt, as Hurghada is a nice place to hang around in Cafe and restaurants.

As a tourist you might get a little hassle from people trying to sell you stuff, but that's normal in any resort area.

I don't know that impression of Hurghada arose.

I have lived here for 4 years and can honestly say I have never felt in the least threatened. As has been said, yes you get a bit of hassle, but a polite no is enough.

If I wanted to, I could do my shopping in the middle of the night, walk to and from my apartment without any problems at all.

How many other countries in the world can you say that about.

Yes there are 'compounds' where some Europeans like to live. These are gated with a guard to stop outsiders going into the premises. Most of these have swimming pools.

Personally I couldn't stand living in one of those. We have a doorman but then nearly every apartment block has one who is supposed to keep an eye open for strangers.

So please don't be put off at all. Hurghada is perfectly safe. I wouldn't live anywhere else. This is my adopted country and whilst Hurghada might not be the prettiest place it has so much going for it, good beaches, wonderful warm water, excellent restaurants, good nightlife.

hi cleo i have also spent a lot of time in hurghada and feel much safer there than i do in ireland at the present have gone out night and day in clubs beaches and shop without any problems at all i think the gated compounds are to keep tourists there to spend their money there not for protection

IT IS SAFE!

Provided that you do not bother other people or provoke them!

I have had only good experiences in Hurghada so far and I wish that everyone else does!

My relative lives there for almost two years and I also visited the place, I spent my three weeks vacation there and all I can say the place is safe. I didn’t encounter any bad incidents or whatsoever. As a matter of fact, we go out every night to dine out and have some shopping.

I don't understand how anyone can say that Hurghada is unsafe.
I've been visiting Hurghada this year nearly once a month to set up a business there and have been to lots of different places at different times of the day and have come across no problems.
Yes, there are some people hassling you to buy goods but if you say a firm No or La then they will leave you alone.
Gated compounds and having security or doormen at apartments or compounds is really no different than having gated complexes or doormen at apartments in the UK. Its to ensure privacy and security, which, unfortunately, no matter where in the world you are today is a requirement.

i have been living in hurghada for the last 18 months and find it the safest place i have ever been. as a woman on my own, i feel very safe walking through the town whatever the time of night or day, i would certainly never dream of staying inside a hotel complex for the duration of my holiday. the only thing you need to be aware of is the occassional cheating you of change, but i think this practice is worldwide. travel reps tend to say these sort of things so that you will book trips with them from the hotel at exhorbitant rates. wherever you stay, just take a taxi (agree the price first) into sheraton road and enjoy.
