Well I have lived here for over 3 years with no ill effects. Everything has to be washed obviously, more for the dirt and dust than anything else.
Saying that though, we did have a problem with the water melons last year, they had been injected with something to make them grow bigger and there were some quite bad side effects.
I have given up buying rice and pasta loose though because the amount of water you have to use to get it even part way clean defeats the object.
