I have it on very good authority from someone who lives in Luxor and was on a balloon trip only last week. There is no problem at all if you wish to take photos.
Maybe the "authorised photographer" is just a money making scam.

Since I first saw this thread, I've read elsewhere online that photography is strictly prohibited at military installations, public works and government buildings.

mushtaq is infamous around these parts
I didn't make the Balloon ride, the few days I was there the visibility was not great, but the last day it was crystal clear, maybe next time.

I took lots of pics from a balloon during my last visit in may. They did say during the briefing that photography wasn't allowed but since everyone had a camera I really can't see how they can police this.

have put some pictures in the gallery, this was not my best balloon ride as we were too far away from the temples but they are still ok pictures

Thanks for sharing, I find it annoying that you can't take pictures in lot of the places, but I still managed to grab a few

We were going to do a balloon ride, but the weather turned bad on the day and had to be cancelled
