Taxis In Egypt

Aside from the haggling we should expect to do when shopping, the taxis can be an experience as well.

The taxi meters generally won't be working, so expect arguments about the price of a fare. Better yet, negotiate a price beforehand.

Alway found the taxis in the tourist resorts cheap and plentiful, but yes I do agree, haggle the price before you get in the taxi, as have not been in one yet where a meter works,

Thanks for the information. Does city cap operate all the taxis now?

I prefer fixed prices, because I'm not really comfortable haggling.

This morning I read something else about the taxi service that I wasn't aware of.

I read that it's customary for males traveling alone to sit in the front beside the driver, and for females traveling alone to sit in the back.

I'm a little surprised that males tend to sit up front. Do you know if there's a reason for this?

I read that alot of the taxi drivers will try to gouge you. And that if you threaten to tell the tourist police they will usually back down. I never knew this. But I don't think that I could actully follow through with this and go to the police. Thought it was interesting though when I read this.

believe me , that is not true , men and women can set in the back seat , it is only Egyptian when they take a taxi they do not like the back seat that is all . and for a female point of view , they would feel more respected to set in the back seat not in the front one.

no need to call the police now . hehehehe

Have more taxis become air conditioned now? When I was there, finding one with a/c that worked was very rare ...and appreciated LOL.

LOL ...that's my memory of it all! I remember paying triple in New Delhi for the one taxi who had real a/c. It was over a hundred degrees out so I hired him for the day!
