Trains

The year before we came to Turkey we went to Luxor. No Nile cruise this time but we did use the train. We took the sleeper train from Luxor to Cairo and what a great experience.Food was great and Booze very cheap.Super Cabins and the staff could not do enough for you.You need to book first class and the cost then was about 60 GBP's each return.Çay in the morning in your cabin and complimentary breakfast, just great.we spent the morning at the Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.Back to the station and the sleeper train back to Luxor.I would do it again anytime. For anybody that is interested in this journey or indeed any other train journey world wide here is a web site http://www.seat61.com

I have been thinking about doing the train journey as it does seem to be a sensible way to travel, and cheap too.

Will definitely give it a go on my next visit to Egypt.

If you're from the states how did the trains compare to the trains here? I've ridden on them a few times and I can't say they are exactly comfortable or nice. Although the US is usually lacking when it comes to trains. So how do you think the train you rode on stacks up to say, Amtrak?

I have never traveled by train but have always wanted to at least once. I would think it would be a great way to see the scenery of an area. Granted it would go by fast but I bet you would travel through all different types of scenery.

Egyptian Rail Network

I found this official site http://www.egyptrail.gov.eg/adocs/index.html for the rail network, the site has schedules, fares page was not available when I checked, maybe it's a new site?

Thanks for posting the link. I found the English button on the upper right side.

After a couple of clicks, I found this fares link:

http://www.egyptrail.gov.eg/docs/online/online.html

I've never traveled by train. I wonder if that would be a relaxing way to get around in Egypt?

I love train travel when it's nice, but anymore trains seem more expensive than flying. Is that true in Egypt as well?

I found internal airfares to be cheaper then the 1st class tickets on the train for foreigners (they get charged a higher rate)
