Egyptian Furniture?

If there a distinct style of Egyptian furniture? If so, I'd be interested in getting information and seeing pictures of some!

The only Egyptian furniture I've seen online are replicas based on ancient things and pretty ornate. I might be wrongly assuming that the average house is somewhat similar to other North African furniture which is more like Moroccan. I love the Moroccan look with the lanterns, the use of patterned rugs and pillows. Maybe someone here can help us out!

Here is a site with some pictures. I would have to agree with you that it seems to be more towards the Moroccan look. I loved seeing some of the pictures myself.

Thanks for sharing the link, tater. Everything there seems pretty ornate! I would feel a little ridiculous if I had that throne in my house, but the wall mirrors are neat.

A lot of the furniture is a cross between the Victorian era and Louis XIV. Big heavy clumsy furniture with gilding. Still a lot of horse hair used for stuffing or what looks like grass (but I'm sure it's not!), hard as bricks to sit on.
Wardrobes must be the biggest I have ever seen in my life, but then absolutely everything is kept in them, clothes, bedding, towels, tea-sets etc.
It is quite easy to get things made but do make sure if going that route, that you tell your carpenter that the wood must be totally dried out. We had two linen chests made and both have split at the top because the wood was too 'new'.

That's terrible that both the ones you had made split. I wish I knew how to make some of my own furniture.
You're right some of the stuff was pretty ornate. I liked the king tut light panel though.

Interesting about the British and French influences. Westernization!

If I could bring anything back from Egypt, it would be rugs, pillows and lanterns. I wish!

Unfortunately hubby isn't very good at bargaining otherwise he would make most of our stuff. He is really very good but was quoted over 200 LE for a sheet of MDF. Will have to try and get an Egyptian friend to buy it for us!
Re the split boxes, they actually look quite nifty now, I bought a couple of cheap belts, brown, cut them and glued two pieces over each top. Hides the splits and personalises them slightly.

I have lots and lots of ideas for adapting things since coming to live in Egypt. I am getting quite creative in my old age.

Now that is a very unique way to hide the splits. I would have never thought of something like that. I probably would have tried to just hide the split by putting a doiley or something over it.
